Gulf War/ Operation Desert Storm 1990-1991
Iraq invaded Kuwait in August, 1990, in an attempt to acquire Kuwait’s oil fields and gain power. The United States, an ally of Kuwait, joined the United Nations to form a broad coalition of other Arab countries. The United Nations then offered Iraq a deadline to withdraw from Kuwait, which was ignored. On January 16th, 1991, the coalition began a large scale air offensive. Iraq responded by launching missiles into the neighboring coalition nations, and Israel. The United Nations achieved victory after a ground offensive that lasted from February 24th to the 28th.
